Fine jewellery is made to be worn, but a little care keeps it bright for decades. These habits work for almost everything in your jewellery box.
Put it on last, take it off first
Perfume, lotion and hairspray leave a film that dulls metal and clouds stones. Dress, spray and moisturise first; add your jewellery at the very end. Take it off before swimming, cleaning or the gym.
Gold
Gold does not tarnish, but it does collect everyday grime. Soak it for a few minutes in warm water with a drop of mild soap, brush gently with a soft toothbrush, rinse and pat dry.
Silver
Sterling silver darkens when it meets air and moisture. Wear it often — skin contact actually helps — and store it in a closed pouch. A silver polishing cloth brings back the shine in seconds.
Diamonds
Diamonds attract oil, which is what makes them look cloudy. The same warm, soapy soak works well; pay attention to the back of the stone, where light enters.
Storage
- Keep pieces apart so harder stones cannot scratch softer metal.
- Fasten chains before storing them so they do not tangle.
- Have prongs and clasps checked once a year.
