Pure gold is too soft to hold its shape for long, so it is mixed with small amounts of other metals. The karat number tells you how much of the piece is gold, measured in parts of 24.
| Karat | Gold content | Often stamped |
|---|---|---|
| 24K | 99.9% | 999 |
| 22K | 91.6% | 916 |
| 18K | 75% | 750 |
| 14K | 58.5% | 585 |
Which should you choose?
22K has the rich, warm colour traditional Indian jewellery is known for, and suits bangles, haars and jhumkas that are not set with many stones.
18K is stronger, which is why it is the usual choice for diamond and gemstone settings — the prongs hold stones more securely.
14K is the most durable of the three and is often used for everyday rings and chains.
Whatever you choose, check the purity stamp and ask for it to be written on your invoice. On our site you will find the purity and weight listed on every product.
